Essential Oils to Treat Joint Pain

Essential oils to treat joint pain are extracted from branches, leaves, stems, flowers and fruit from many plants. they contain minerals and nutrients that can soothe arthritis inflammation and pain.

Mixtures of more that one essential oil have been proven to enhance the effectiveness of relieving pain. Frankincense and Myrrh work well together, as do ginger and orange essential oils.

Essential oils can be used topically by adding a few drops to a carrier oil and applying the mixture to your skin. You can also enjoy them through inhalation from a diffuser. Some essential oils can be added to your diet.

Essential oils are very concentrated so a few drops should be added to a carrier oil such as olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, sweet almond oil, grape seed oil or  jojoba oil if you are applying the oil to your skin.  See cautions below.

Recommended Essential Oils for Joint Pain

There are many essential oils that can improve joint pain.

  • Essential oils that you can safely add to your diet to improve your RA joint pain include peppermint. orange, ginger, frankincense, myrrh and tumeric.
    • Peppermint decreases inflammation to relieve pain. You can add it to water or brew it for tea.
    • Orange is a natural antioxidant that interrupts the inflammatroy response in your immune system.
    • Ginger has been used for centuries to alleviate pain. It is a natural anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory substance.  I make my own ginger tea with filtered water and drink it several times a day. I add a green tea bag to it in the morning and a camomile tea bag to it at bedtime.
    • Frankincense ( also known as Boswellia) and myrrh  have been used successfully as a natural treatment for arthritis to reduce the inflammation and pain of arthritis. They also improve your immune system.
    • Turmeric is another supplement that can be used to treat arthritis pain. It is best used as a supplement because it is difficult for your body to absorb. I take a turmeric supplement twice a day for my arthritis pain. It is as effective as an NSAID for me.
  • Other essential oils to treat joint pain include:
    • Lavender: A study conducted on animals and published in PubMed concluded that lavender had a similar effect on pain as the drug tramadol. The researchers recommended lavender as important therapeutic oil for pain.
    • Oregano Oil: This oil is very strong  1 drop should be added to  5 drops of olive oil then applied to the skin over your inflamed joint to relieve pain. Always check with your health care provider before using it and do a skin patch test prior to using it for the first time.
    • Ventiver Oil: This oil is made from the roots of the Indian grass, Ventiver. It stimulates the immune system.
    • Sage Oil: Dr. Mercola just published a blog on the advantages of Sage essential oil. for providing immune system support.
    • Cessia Oil is an anti-inflammatory oil that helps relieve arthritis symptoms.

Cautions About the Use of Essential Oils

Essential oils that you purchase are very strong and have medicinal properties so you need to be cautious when using them. You can find a list of cautions Here and a guide for choosing a qualified practitioner to assist you Here.

Always be cautious when trying a new essential oil. Some people can be allergic to certain essential oils. You should do a patch skin test when you are trying an essential oil for the first time. Put 3-5 drops of the oil in an ounce of a carrier oil. Apply some of this mixture to some unbroken skin on your forearm.. If you have no reaction to the oil in 24-48 hours it is safe for you to use.

You should discuss the use of essential oils with your health care provider prior to adding them to your joint pain treatments. Many of them can effectively improve your joint pain but they do have medicinal properties. I can’t stress this enough: DO NOT USE ESSENTIAL OILS WITHOUT GETTING PROFESSIONAL ADVICE.
